Glen Castle

Atlanta, GA

The complex consists of 3 different buildings. First is the stockade or castle, originally the City of Atlanta Prison, built by prisoners at the Atlanta Bureau of Prisons. This existing building is all reinforced concrete from walls to floors to roof. The roof is made of concrete trusses… which is interesting. We are updating the building for new use, which involves a new elevator and new ramps for access inside. The second building is the blacksmith building, which is getting a new elevator inside and new CMU. We are also installing a cold formed steel roofed framing for a kitchen in a proposed new restaurant. The third building contains stables - supposedly horse/donkey stables - and has masonry rubble walls with wood posts and beam interior construction. The renovation opens the closely spaced (13’-0” on center) columns for a possible event space. The change of occupancy and the amount of renovations have triggered an upgrade to current codes for lateral design and a new lateral load resisting system made out of tube steel braces.
